Finding the Right Decorative Container for Your New Plant

Plants are one of the hottest trends in home décor, providing beautiful color, depth and living-energy to any space. While some plants come already potted in a decorative container, most do not.

Therefore, you’ll likely want to move your plant from its purposeful pot to a more pleasing container that fits your decor.

While it’s tempting to place style before function, it is important to consider your plant’s needs before purchasing a planter. Here are some criteria to consider from Just DIY Decor when selecting that decorative container for your new plant.

Drainage
Proper drainage encourages root growth and is one of the keys to keeping your plant happy and healthy. Although every plant has different hydration needs, most will suffocate and rot when left in waterlogged soil caused from a pot with poor drainage. When excess water is drained away from the roots, your plant will thrive.

The HC Companies offers planters with several drainage options, such as our Classic Planter with ten drain holes and matching saucer, our Santa Fe planter with a removable cap dish, our Aria planter with self-watering stem and optional drain plugs and many more to suit your plant’s specific drainage needs.

Size
You want to be sure your new plant fits nicely in your home. A planter that is too big can cause root rot because the soil will dry too slowly. On the other hand, a planter that is too small can cause soil to dry too quickly (making it difficult to keep the plant sufficiently watered) or become root-bound and inhibit proper growth.

Ideally, you’ll want to keep the plant in a planter that is the same size it’s growing in. If this is not possible, or the plant looks to be outgrowing its current container, choose a planter that is 1 to 2 inches larger in diameter than the current pot if the plant is currently in a 10” container or smaller or is a slow grower. If your current pot is larger than 10” or your plant is a fast grower, choose a planter that is 2 to 4 inches larger in diameter. The HC Companies offers planters well-suited for common indoor plants (6 to 12 inches) and larger plants and decorative trees (15 to 42 inches).
