A Purple Promise

Last year, we received a call from Susan English, a member of the Florida Military Order of the Purple Heart in Lakeland, Florida. The conversation began as Susan explained their mission – to do whatever they can to assist wounded veterans, particularly those in assisted living or retirement communities. Originally, the plan was to create a park bench in the community made out of recycled plastics that the Purple Heart Auxiliary had collected. This project came to an unfortunate halt when the manufacturer they had initially worked with closed. During the time this plan was set in motion, The Purple Heart Auxiliary collected recyclable plastics for 3 years and collected over 500 pounds of material. When it became evident that the project would no longer happen, Susan began looking for other opportunities to use the recycled plastics and still make a difference for the veterans.

Determined to find another way to incorporate their recyclables into a program for the veterans, Susan looked around and stumbled upon the number for HCxCHG Customer Service on the bottom of one of the potted plants she had in her home. When she connected to our Director of Sustainaable Solutions, Tom Marting, a plan to bring a place of tranquility to the community was brought to life! HCxCHG offered a one-for-one opportunity to exchange the plastic collected for planters. With the shocking 500 pounds of plastic that was delivered to our facility, HCxCHG was able to create 360 large purple planters!

Most importantly, HCxCHG is THRILLED to have the opportunity to not only support our veterans, but to do so by contributing to a sustainability project that can bring happiness and life to the gardens of these communities.
